The Deputy Majority Leader of the University of Ghana Parliament House (UGPH), Derrick Candeela Biam, has called on University of Ghana (UG) students to join the House, describing it as a platform for leadership development and parliamentary training.

His call follows an increase in the number of students applying to join UGPH in recent years, with some members going on to secure Student Representative Council (SRC) executive positions due to their affiliation with the House.

Speaking to Univers News, Mr. Biam highlighted some of the opportunities available to students who join the House.

“The University of Ghana Parliament House offers a wide range of opportunities for students who wish to join. It helps in the development of leadership skills, shapes one’s understanding of leadership, and improves public speaking abilities. It also develops critical thinking and exposes members to democratic governance and legislative procedures. Members also gain networking opportunities, including visits to Ghana’s Parliament House, where they can meet prominent figures in the political space,” he said.

Mr. Biam also clarified the scope of work carried out by the UG Parliament House, explaining that the House operates as an independent parliamentary society on campus.

“The UG Parliament House does not directly represent the University of Ghana student body. The body that represents students is the Student Representative Council (SRC). The UG Parliament House is a parliamentary society that simulates parliamentary proceedings, promotes debate, and helps groom leaders, debaters, and public speakers, while exposing students to democratic governance and legislative processes,” he explained.
