Deputy Director-General (Livelihood) of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Albert Akuka Alalzuuga, has disclosed that the challenges the organisation faces are complex and often lead to disruptions in academic work.

He made this known in an exclusive interview with Univers News during the Foresight Analysis Workshop on Education System Resilience.

“We manage disasters, as our name suggests. Over the years, one of the challenges we have faced is that disasters often lead to disruptions in academic work,” he said.

Mr. Akuka noted that government must put proper structures in place to ensure continuity in the education system, especially during emergencies or disasters.

He explained that there are currently no strong and reliable systems to adequately support education—particularly at the pre-tertiary level—when disruptions occur.

“It doesn’t appear that we have very good systems in place whereby, when a disaster disrupts a particular community, there is an arrangement to ensure continuous education, especially at the pre-tertiary level. Primary schools, junior high schools, and others often face serious challenges.

“Several examples confirm this. Government must put structures in place to ensure the continuity of academic work in the event of any disaster or emergency,” he added.

He further stated that the workshop would help address some of the challenges within the country’s education system and assist government and stakeholders in finding practical solutions to issues that interrupt academic activities.

“For me, this workshop will go a long way in helping to unearth some of the challenges within the system and help government find solutions to issues that disrupt academic work at the pre-tertiary level during emergencies,” he said.
