The University of Ghana Students Representative Council has organized a media and secretariat workshop to train and equip students with graphic designing skills, photography, public speaking, and CV writing skills.
The two-day event started on Friday, March 17, and ended on March 18. The focus was to train secretaries, and media men to improve their skills in the field they work. The workshop saw talks from experts from the field sharing their knowledge with students.
The first day was centered on Graphic Designing and photography while the second day was on Public Speaking and CV writing.
Winner of Tv3’s Ghana’s most beautiful, 2021 Benedicta Sarfoa Asamoah, who spoke on Public Speaking and communication urged students to strive to be better speakers by listening to others.
“What makes a good speaker is someone who always listens to others, you can’t be a speaker until you listen. A secretary can only write a good minute if they listen well. So let’s be a good listener “
She also tasked speakers to adopt the power of storytelling to grasp their audience.
“Try to connect with your audience on a personal level by sharing personal stories that relate to your message. We are emotional beings, we want to know the full details of a story from the beginning, middle than the end , so use those tricks to catch your audience and link the stories to your message. This can help build rapport and keep your audience engaged throughout your speech.”
Madam Edwina Painstil from the University of Ghana Career and Counselling center, spoke on CV writing and getting ready for the job market. According to her, with the growing technology in the world, there’s the need to own CVs that are precise, simple and meet reviewing by Artificial Intelligence software.
“Now we are in are technology-driven world ,let your CV fit the job you are going for. Now employers don’t have time to look at the CVs one by on , they just use Artificial intelligence software so you need to have software that will be selected by this software.
She also advised students to take advantage of internship opportunities and appreciate most of the work experience they’ve obtained.
“I often hear students say they haven’t done anything, they don’t have any work experience but you might have sold or helped your mother to sell.
Bread or whatever it is, it’s a working experience find a nice description and add it to your CV.

The General Secretary, Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom also urged students to make use of the tips shared by the speakers and keep practicing.
Training and Developing manpower of secretaries was one of Emmanuella Boakye Yiadom’s policies when she was campaigning to be the SRC General Secretary.
