Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo has scored his first goal for Manchester City on his debut against Exeter City in the third round of the English FA Cup.
Semenyo achieved the feat in a match where City thrashed the third-tier side 10–1.
The former Bournemouth forward, who started the game for City, was assisted by Frenchman Rayan Cherki in the 54th minute to make it six for the Cityzens. Moments earlier, Semenyo had provided the assist for Rico Lewis to score City’s fifth goal.
The £65 million signing was substituted in the 64th minute for Jeremy Doku. Before the match, head coach Pep Guardiola revealed that Semenyo would definitely feature against Exeter, although he was unsure whether the winger would start.
Guardiola’s uncertainty over Semenyo’s starting role highlights City’s attacking depth, which left many football fans in disbelief after the Ghanaian made it clear he preferred a move to City despite interest from other top English clubs, where he was expected to receive more playing time.
Going forward, the player who surpassed Mohammed Kudus to become the most expensive Ghanaian transfer of all time will be hoping for more opportunities in Guardiola’s squad, despite competition from the likes of Jeremy Doku, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Omar Marmoush, and Savinho.
