The president of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, has commended the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for its decision not to increase transport fares despite the introduction of the GH¢1 fuel levy by the government.

Speaking exclusively to Univers Business, Dr. Obeng noted that this move sends a strong signal that prices of goods and services may remain stable, easing fears of inflation among Ghanaians.

“It is very important that the GPRTU have come to clarify that it is not going to add up to the transport cost. We are very grateful to them, because normally when the fuel prices go up, food items also go up,” he said.

The GH¢1 fuel levy, introduced by the government, took effect today as part of measures to raise funds for the energy sector debt.
