The Head of the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) at the University of Ghana, Selina Torrison Saaka, has pointed out that integrity remains a major challenge in the administration of student financial aid across institutions.
Speaking at a workshop on “How to Set Up a Financial Aid Office” during the 20th Anniversary Conference of UG’s SFAO, Ms. Saaka stressed that while many institutions focus on disbursement, the real strength of a financial aid office lies in the systems and values that guide its operations—particularly integrity.
According to her, the credibility of financial aid offices depends on consistent, fair, and transparent processes. At UG, she noted, the SFAO is deliberate about its vetting and interview procedures. Applicants go through a rigorous process involving a seven-member panel, with representatives from the SRC, funding partners, and the university administration. The diversity of this panel, she said, helps ensure fairness and prevent bias.
She shared an example to illustrate the need for thorough screening: during one interview, a student seeking a second scholarship eventually admitted—after probing—that the money was intended to buy a fridge. This, Ms. Saaka explained, highlighted the need for diligent assessment, not to disqualify students unfairly, but to ensure limited resources go to those who truly need them.
”This level of diligence is not just routine bureaucracy,” she said. “It reflects our commitment to student welfare. Maintaining integrity safeguards access and preserves trust in the financial aid system, which is critical for its long-term impact.”
