Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has urged TikTok to establish a local content regulation team in Ghana. This call was made during the Minister’s Press Briefing held earlier today under the theme “Key Initiatives and Developments Within the Sector.”
Addressing journalists, the Minister disclosed that he has recently held discussions with representatives of TikTok to ensure that the platform becomes more beneficial to Ghanaian content creators, especially those producing educational content.
“We’re not just looking at content that is for entertainment purposes,” he emphasised. “People should be able to make money from educational videos. TikTok has a whole STEM section, and we’ve engaged with them to return and have a session with our creators on how to maximise their benefits on the platform.”
He further explained that one of the critical outcomes of the engagement was the need for fair visibility and economic value for local creators. “The algorithms must be structured to provide full visibility and value for the content our creators produce,” he stated.
A major concern raised during the meeting was TikTok’s lack of a content moderation team within Ghana or even the West African sub-region. Hon. George revealed that TikTok’s current moderation for Africa is handled from Dublin, Ireland—a situation he deemed inadequate.
“One of the takeaways we gave them was to go back to their headquarters in China and tell them that we’re demanding a content regulation team locally. This is something other platforms have already done in the region,” he stressed.
The Minister’s call is part of broader efforts by the Ministry to ensure digital platforms operating in Ghana align with the country’s regulatory expectations while creating meaningful opportunities for Ghanaian youth in the digital economy.
As content creation becomes a growing source of income and influence for young people across the country, the government says it is committed to engaging with global platforms to ensure equitable access, safety, and monetisation frameworks.
