Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described the ongoing scandal involving the alleged misappropriation of GH¢548 million at the National Service Scheme (NSS) as “extremely serious,” stressing that the amount involved is “no chicken change.”

This follows recent revelations of alleged financial misconduct within the National Service Scheme, where over GH¢548 million is believed to have been misappropriated.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers, Mr. Kpebu expressed concern over how such a substantial amount of money could disappear from the state’s coffers, noting that it could have been used to complete existing national projects or initiate new ones.

“This is extremely serious because the total sum involved GH¢548 million is a huge figure,” he said. “We have schools still operating under trees. Even the issue of nursing allowances could have been tackled with this money.”

According to him, the government has claimed it needs GH¢2 billion to meet the conditions of service demanded by nurses. He argued that if GH¢548 million had been used effectively, it could have addressed at least 25% of that challenge.

“This tells you that the money involved is no chicken change. It’s an extremely huge figure,” he emphasized.

The alleged scandal has triggered nationwide concern, with legal experts and civil society organizations calling for thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences.
