The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered three public university unions to immediately call off their indefinite strike, citing a breach of the Labour Act after the unions defied a directive to suspend the action.
The affected unions involved include the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) declared the strike over the government’s alleged failure to implement a 2024 agreement on conditions of service.
According to the NLC, it received a notice of the unions’ intention to strike on May 12 and summoned all parties, including representatives of government, to a hearing on May 21.
However, despite the Commission’s directive to halt the strike pending resolution, the unions proceeded with industrial action.
The Commission confirmed this through a press release issued by the unions on May 21, titled: “SSA-UoG, TUAAG and FUSSAG Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Government’s Continued Breach of Agreement.”
As a result, the NLC declined to hear the case, stating that the unions had violated Section 160 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which requires aggrieved parties to suspend strike actions once the Commission intervenes.
“The Commission declined to hear the matter… until the Complainant Unions call off the strike and duly notify the Commission of same,” a statement signed by Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck, Acting Executive Secretary, read.
The unions were represented at the hearing by their respective national executives, except SSA-UoG which was absent. Government was represented by officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission
