In a historic moment for the Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana, the 2023/2024 University of Ghana Vice Chancellor’s Academic Awards Ceremony marked the introduction of a new and prestigious category: The Best Male Graduating Sociology Student Award. This award not only spotlights academic brilliance but also symbolizes a broader commitment to celebrating gender-inclusive excellence within one of the university’s most rigorous disciplines.

This groundbreaking award was instituted in honor of the Late Emeritus Professor G. K. Nukunya, a towering figure in African sociology whose extensive scholarly contributions reshaped sociological thought across the continent and beyond. Renowned for his intellectual rigor and mentorship, Professor Nukunya’s legacy continues to inspire generations of scholars. The award, officially titled “The Late Emeritus Professor G. K. Nukunya Award for the Best Male Graduating Student in Sociology”, was initiated by his family to immortalize his memory while recognizing outstanding male students who demonstrate academic distinction, leadership, and a passionate commitment to the field of sociology.

In a moment of profound pride and inspiration, Kelvin B. Annor-Yeboah, a young Ghanaian scholar with an exceptional academic record and a dynamic presence on the University of Ghana campus popularly known as Kvng Kelly, emerged as the first-ever recipient of this distinguished accolade. Kelvin’s journey through the demanding corridors of the Sociology Department is a testament to determination, resilience, and intellectual curiosity. The award was presented by the sons of the Late Emeritus Nukunya’s children, Mr Akorli Nukunya and Dr. Tsatsu Nukunya. The award contained a Cash Prize and a Certificate.

As a student who combined academic excellence with extracurricular engagement, Kelvin stood out not only for his remarkable GPA but also for his active role as a volunteer broadcaster at Radio Univers 105.7FM, the university’s campus-based radio station and a musician. His ability to balance rigorous academic work with vibrant campus involvement reflects a unique blend of scholarly commitment and community spirit.

The study of Sociology at the University of Ghana is known for its intellectual depth and intensity. Each year, hundreds of students enroll in the program at Level 100, but only a fraction successfully navigate their way to graduation. Many are daunted by the department’s high academic standards, the theoretical rigor of its curriculum, and the critical thinking it demands. To excel in this program requires more than just intelligence—it demands endurance, discipline, and a deep-seated passion for understanding society and its complexities.

Kelvin’s achievement, therefore, transcends personal recognition. It represents a powerful message to current and future students: that with passion, perseverance, and purpose, greatness is within reach. As the first honoree of this newly established award, he sets a high bar and opens doors for future male sociology students to aspire, excel, and be recognized.

In receiving this award, Kelvin has not only carved his name in the annals of the department’s history but has also become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the next generation of African sociologists.
