The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take swift action to restore discipline across senior high schools nationwide. He expressed deep concern over what he described as a worrying decline in discipline within the country’s educational institutions.
During a meeting with school heads in Sunyani in the Bono Region, the Minister highlighted a recent shooting at SDA Senior High School in Kumasi as a clear indication of growing misconduct in schools.
Referring to the incident, he stated that it “leaves much to be desired,” and emphasized the need for immediate reforms.
Haruna Iddrisu also mentioned that GES Director-General, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has the full backing of the government to implement necessary measures to address violence and restore order in schools.
“He has our full policy support to enforce those directives. So, the ‘unGhanaian’ development of shooting in Kumasi, the Director General of the GES has the full support of the government for you to strengthen your inspection in order that guns, knives, and other violent tools are not found in our schools,” he said.
Meanwhile, the family of Suzi Adwoa Penamang, the 16-year-old student who was shot by a fellow student, is appealing for urgent financial help to save her from losing her sight due to the injuries she sustained.
