Broadcast Journalist and General Manager of Citi FM and Channel One TV, Bernard Avle, has recounted on how he ended up joining Radio Univers as a student volunteer while pursuing his undergraduate degree at the University of Ghana.
Speaking as a panelist during the Nova Legon event for freshmen of the University of Ghana organized by campus based radio station, Radio Univers, Mr. Avle stated that he had the no intention of practicing journalism or joining Radio Univers until he stepped in for a friend who was supposed to be on a show.
”I joined Radio Univers by accident. When I was coming here, I didn’t have an ambition of becoming a journalist, but when I got the opportunity, I took it because I think I was born to do journalism but I didn’t know until the decision was taken. My very good friend, Leslie Adjavon, who ran the Debater’s Club at the time, said there’s a show on Radio Univers called Weekend Teaser and they have a debate segment. So, something happened and the guy who was supposed to go on the debate, couldn’t go. So, he asked me whether I could go to Radio Univers at 2 o’clock to debate. And he gave me the topic,” he recounted.
Speaking at the event, Bernard Avle encouraged students to embrace discipline and motivation as essential tools for success, drawing from his personal experiences during his time in school.
“I always say that success is two things: motivation and discipline. I was motivated to get a first class because one day, while announcing an upcoming JCR clean-up exercise, someone insulted me from the balcony of one of the halls. That insult actually motivated me,” he said.
The event formed part of Radio Univers’ ongoing efforts to inspire, guide, and support freshmen as they begin their academic journey at the University of Ghana.
