The University of Ghana has honored the Managing Director of Ecobank Kenya and a passionate advocate for women’s financial empowerment, Mrs. Josephine Anan-Ankomah, with an honorary doctorate.
The award was presented during the 2025 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecture Series in recognition of her significant contributions to international banking and her role as the keynote speaker at the event, which took place on March 13 and 14 at the University of Ghana’s Great Hall.
The Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures is an annual event organized by the University of Ghana to honor James Kwegyir Aggrey, Alexander Fraser, and Sir Gordon Guggisberg for their pivotal contributions to the establishment and growth of higher education in Ghana.
At the ceremony, the university’s Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, commended Mrs. Anan-Ankomah for her leadership, resilience, and impact, highlighting her as a role model for future generations.
“Mrs. Anan-Ankomah has demonstrated remarkable dedication in her field. Her leadership and determination serve as an inspiration to younger generations, encouraging them to pursue excellence.”
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Anan-Ankomah, an alumna of the university, reflected on the significance of the honor.
“I never imagined that this esteemed institution would bestow such an honor on me for simply applying what it taught me. For this, Madam Chancellor and Madam Vice-Chancellor, I am profoundly grateful.”
The two-day lecture series, attended by faculty, industry experts, and students, focused on the theme “Her Money, Her Power: Making Finance Work for Women.” The first session examined the structural barriers hindering women’s access to financial opportunities, while the second presented practical solutions to promote women-centered financing.
Mrs. Anan-Ankomah is a distinguished Ghanaian banker with over 30 years of experience in the financial industry. She currently serves as the Regional Executive for Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa (CESA) and as Managing Director of Ecobank Kenya, overseeing banking operations in 18 countries.
