Students at the University of Ghana’s main campus have expressed concerns over the poor condition of the Jones Quartey Building (JQB) lecture halls.

Speaking to Univers News, the students highlighted the building’s current state and its adverse impact on academic activities.

Some students mentioned the discomfort caused by poor ventilation, particularly during afternoon lectures. Others pointed out disparities between JQB and other lecture halls, urging the university to provide equal attention to its development.

“The university needs to renovate the ceilings and fix the fans to improve ventilation so students can feel comfortable. Most afternoons, it’s unbearably hot, and we can’t concentrate.”

“I’m particularly concerned about the fans, sockets, and sound systems. There should also be provisions for people with disabilities. Compared to halls like GCB, NB, and NNB, JQB is lagging. Management needs to address these issues.”

The lack of proper ventilation was repeatedly emphasized, with some students noting its impact even on lecturers. Others underscored the unfriendly nature of certain JQB lecture halls for persons with disabilities.

“JQB is one of the largest and most common lecture halls on campus, yet it has the worst ventilation. For example, some lecturers sweat profusely, even under the fan. Their shirts get soaked, which shows how poorly the system is functioning.”

“JQB should have enough air conditioners. Instead, the fans don’t work, the sound systems are subpar, and there are no accommodations for disabled students in rooms like JQB 23 and JQB 24.”

The Jones Quartey Building (JQB) serves a dual purpose, functioning as both an academic and administrative hub. It houses several lecture rooms and various offices, including the Students’ Accounts Office, the Academic Quality Assurance Directorate, and the Radio Univers newsroom, among others.
