Students of the University of Ghana have shared mixed reactions to Afua Asantewaa Aduonum’s decision to attempt the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual for the second time.

Afua, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and former contender for the record, announced her upcoming attempt via Instagram on November 15, 2024. The event, slated for December 21, 2024, has sparked conversations about its necessity, practicality, and impact.

While some students questioned the motives behind the attempt, others commended her for her unwavering determination.

“Hoh! Forget her! It’s clout she’s seeking. She has realized that aside from this singathon, she’s not really relevant. This is the only thing that can make her get attention,” a skeptical student remarked.

Another student criticized the initiative, suggesting that the resources could be better utilized elsewhere.

“I really think this singathon is not necessary. She has done it before, and it didn’t go well. Now she wants to do it again? This is obviously for clout. She should focus on something productive that will bring profit to the country or benefit the youth—not just organize a singathon, get popular, and then what?”

On the flip side, Afua has received support from a section of students who admire her resilience in pursuing her goal despite previous setbacks and criticism.

“I think it’s determination, for real. Upon all the shading she got from Ghanaians, she’s back again. She has a purpose, and that’s what she’s chasing after. Yeah!” a supporter shared.

Afua’s Instagram post, which included a flyer captioned, “Here we go!!! I’m excited and ready,” has also drawn attention from netizens, with many cheering her on. However, she has yet to disclose the target duration for this latest attempt.

As December 21 approaches, UG students and the wider public remain divided, with some eagerly anticipating the event and others questioning its practicality and purpose.
