The Ballon d’Or has become a benchmark for determining the best player in the world during a particular European season, formally a calendar year. Two names that come to mind when the Ballon d’Or is mentioned are Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, primarily because Messi holds the most Ballon d’Or awards (8), followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with 5. This arguably makes these two talents the best footballers of all time.

Some notable players who have claimed this prestigious award in recent years include Karim Benzema in 2022, Luka Modric in 2018, Kaka in 2007, Fabio Cannavaro in 2006, and Ronaldinho in 2005.

However, the 2024 edition promises to be highly contested among 30 elite athletes, with notable contenders such as Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Rodri, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland.

Sports journalists from the top 100 FIFA men’s world-ranking nations will vote for the men’s award based on three key criteria.

1. Individual performances, decisive and impressive character

Individual performances focus on how a player’s skill, decision-making, and creativity impact a game, irrespective of the team’s overall performance. For example, a player might dominate a match through exceptional dribbling, passing, or goal-scoring efforts. Decisive refers to actions that significantly influence the outcome, such as scoring a crucial goal or making a vital save. Impressive character describes a player’s mental qualities, including leadership, resilience, and composure under pressure.

2. Team performances and achievements

Team performances focus on how well a nominee’s  team functions as a cohesive unit, using teamwork, tactics, and consistency to execute strategies. Achievements are the tangible results of these efforts, such as winning titles, qualifying for tournaments, or securing a strong league position, reflecting the team’s success throughout the season.

3. Class and fair play

Class refers to a player’s elegance, professionalism, and sportsmanship, demonstrating poise and respect in all situations. Fair play emphasises adhering to the rules with integrity, respecting opponents and referees, and avoiding cheating or unsportsmanlike behaviour. Both values uphold the spirit and ethics of the beautiful game.

The 68th annual ceremony will focus solely on players’ performances during the 2023/24 season. The event is scheduled for October 28, 2024, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.
