The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has released an official update on its ongoing nationwide strike, reaffirming its commitment to continue the industrial action until the concerns of its members are addressed.
In a letter dated October 15, 2024, signed by Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, National President of UTAG, the association expressed gratitude to its members for their “unwavering support, solidarity, and commitment” to the ongoing strike.
The letter emphasized that the collective effort of all members is essential in safeguarding their welfare and advancing the common good of the nation.
UTAG reiterated its commitment to democratic values and urged members to remain united and steadfast in their resolve. The association acknowledged that while there are diverse opinions among members, the majority decision as reached through democratic processes must guide their actions.
Recent developments regarding a group of concerned members led by Prof. Isaac Boadi from UTAG-UPSA were also addressed. According to the letter, an unsigned petition from a group of 57 individuals, some of whom are not UTAG members, was received. The petition called for a press conference to discuss the ongoing strike. UTAG rejected the petition and reiterated that all concerns must be addressed through internal dialogue.
UTAG further warned against any attempts by a few individuals to derail the strike or undermine the association’s collective goals.
The letter concluded by announcing a National Executive Council meeting scheduled for October 16, 2024. The council is expected to review the government’s response to UTAG’s demands and decide on the next course of action.
UTAG urged members to remain calm and continue to support the strike as the leadership works to resolve the impasse.
Additionally, the association touched on the issue of illegal mining (Galamsey), linking it to their broader fight for a just, non-partisan society. UTAG called on its members to continue supporting the collective’s efforts to safeguard the nation’s resources and future.
