The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and various Catholic lay organizations, has announced an Environmental Prayer protest walk against illegal minning also known as galamsey.

The demonstrations scheduled for Friday, 11th October 2024, aims to raise awareness and advocate for immediate government action to combat the rampant issues linked to illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

The protest will begin at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka at 10:00 a.m. Participants will march prayerfully along Castle Road, through the Ridge Roundabout, past Parliament House, and conclude at Christ the King Catholic Church, Cantonments, around 2:00 p.m.

The event will begin in an Episcopal Mass led by His Grace the Archbishop, followed by the presentation of a petition to the President at the Jubilee House.

The Catholic Church has long emphasized its moral and civic responsibility to protect the environment for future generations.

At their recent Annual Conference, the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, reiterated its opposition to galamsey, while the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has consistently condemned illegal mining activities, calling for decisive actions to safeguard the environment.

The organizers invite not only the Catholic faithful but also individuals from various faiths, civil society organizations, environmental activists and government representatives, to join this crucial event.

The Ghana Police Service has been duly notified to ensure safety and security throughout the protest.
