UG, UDS, UHAS UTAG votes to join nationwide strike on October 10

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) branches at the University of Ghana (UG) and the University for Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) have voted to join the nationwide strike set for October 10, 2024, called by Organized Labour.

At the University for Development Studies, polls conducted from October 5 to 6, 2024, show that 86.5% of UTAG members voted in favor of industrial action, with only 13.5% voting against.

The vote was in response to a motion calling for industrial action in support of a nationwide ban on mining activities in protected areas such as forest reserves, farms, and rivers.

A total of 311 members participated in the poll, which was conducted by the UDS Electoral Committee.

Similarly, at the University of Ghana, 80.14% of UTAG members voted in favour of the strike in a poll held on October 8, 2024. Out of 443 total votes cast, 355 members supported the motion, while 88 members (19.86%) voted against it.

Also at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, out of the 262 eligible voters, a total of 115 votes were cast. Of these, 104 voted in support of the strike, while 11 voted against it.

UTAG’s leadership is expected to consolidate the results from various universities and announce a final decision on the strike by Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
