Kojo Pumpuni Asante, Director of Advocacy & Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has called for a collaborative technical review of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) IT systems, involving all major political parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The move aims to enhance transparency and public confidence ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the media, on October 2, 2024, Asante raised concerns about issues like the illegal voter transfer incident in Pusiga, highlighted by the NDC.

He stressed the urgency of addressing such breaches and urged that the matter be taken beyond partisan politics.

Despite the EC’s assurances that it is working to prevent unauthorized access to its systems, Asante emphasized the importance of having independent technical experts assess the systems.

“This is about ensuring all stakeholders receive verifiable assurance from the EC,” he stated, calling for concrete measures to secure the integrity of the electoral process.

Asante further noted that the EC, as the referee in the elections, must demonstrate fairness and transparency.

“It’s crucial that these assurances are tangible and not just verbal commitments”

He urged the EC to engage in technical discussions as a priority, addressing concerns about potential cyber threats and reinforcing public trust in the electoral system.
