The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens ( WACCBIP) at the University of Ghana, has celebrated 10 years of outstanding research record for globally recognised research and excellent graduate training.
This year’s conference was held at the Cedi Conference with high personality profiles in attendance. Vice Chancellor at University of Ghana, Prof.Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Dean of the school of engineering, Prof. Elsie Kaufmann, Provost at the University of Ghana, Prof. Gordon Awandare and Prof. Ernest Aryeteey were just some of the distinguished guests among many presnt. This year’s conference was themed ‘Addressing Health Challenges in Africa: A Decade of Building World-class and Innovative Scientific Capacity’.
In its decade long existence, WACCBIP has provided fellowship for 56 postdoctoral fellows from 20 countries which includes local and international students, Students for masters and PhD training at UG.
Speaking at the conference, the vice Chancellor expressed her contentment, further congratulating the centre for its remarkable impact within the University and African at large.
“UG is very proud of WACCBIP’s achievement and the remarkable influence within the university in Ghana and Africa at large. For instance the role of WACCBIP in the Covid 19 natutal response was a testament to the centre’s research capacity.”
“WACCBIP is a self financing unit having attracted more than 56 million USD since its establishment. These funds have been used for the following, the construction of the WACCBIP building, upgrading and equipping laboratories, purchase of high edge equipment……”
The Vice Chancellor assured the centre of her unending support inorder to improve the performance of WACCBIP and also promote the UG brand.
“I would like to assure WACCBIP and our other flagship centres of excellence of my unflinching support to ensure that they continue to excel.”
In her concluding remarks, Prof. Appiah Amfo also expressed immense gratitude to the funding partners who have held the centre down in making the centre a world-class intensive research centre.
“I would like to express immense gratitude to WACCBIP’s funding partners who had retained confidence in the university by committing to resoures for WACCBIP for training and research.”
The centre has promoted inclusivity by equipping the assisting technology laboratory to improve the teaching and learning support system for students, faculty and staff with disabilities.
The West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) is one of the World Bank’s African Centres of Excellence (ACE) at the University of Ghana, led by faculty from the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology (BCMB) and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana.
The Centre has a mandate to provide Master’s, PhD & postdoctoral training, as well as targeted short-courses in Cell & Molecular Biology, and to conduct applied research into biology and pathogenesis of tropical diseases, with the aim of increasing research and innovation by enhancing collaboration among biomedical scientists and industry leaders across Africa.
