The University of Ghana Law Students’ Union (LSU) has celebrated its 49th Law Week with a series of events designed to engage, educate, and entertain its members.
Spanning from 1st to 7th July 2024, the week-long celebration, held under various daily themes sought to empower ‘Future Legal Minds’, featuring a diverse lineup of activities that highlighted both the academic and social aspects of law student life.
The festivities kicked off with an official launch of the Law Week celebrations and a legal clinic. The launch event set the tone for the week, emphasizing the importance of legal education and community service. The legal clinic provided an opportunity for law students to interact with lawyers such as the dean of UG School of Law (SoL), Prof. Raymond Atuguba together with Dr. Samuel Obeng Manteaw, the patron of the LSU, Yaw Acheampong Boafo ESQ, and Nana Akwasi Awuah ESQ for an insightful conversation themed ‘Building a legal career: Skills for success’.
The launch saw top firms participating to offer students internship opportunities and mentorships, with some of them including Atuguba and Associates, Sustineri Attorneys, JLD&MB Legal Consultancy, AB Lexmall Associates, B&P Associates, and ENSafrica.
Other activities included in the week’s celebrations were a Career costume Day & Writing Workshop, the Inter-Firm Moot Finals, a Wear LSU Day, Company Law Book Talk, and Makola Prep Talk.
The Inter-Firm Moot Finals saw Lex Apex make the biggest win, with the best oralist for the day from the same firm, Elsie Akubia. The first runner-up firm, Animus Domini also won an award for the firm with the 3Ps (punctuality, persistence, and professionalism). Another law firm, DNA and Partners also won the award for best memorial for the overall competition. Students such as Laud Annang, Naa Adjeley Koney, and Anthony Julius won awards for best oralist in the semi-finals with Daniel Obeng winning the award for best oralist during the preliminary rounds.
The week culminated with fun activities such as a movie night, a sports event and finally, a dinner. The dinner was also an opportunity for outgoing executives of the LSU to hand over to newly elected executives. Speeches by the former executives led by Emmanuel Akpagli and Patricia Baidoo, highlighted the achievements of the LSU in the last academic year and the importance of continuing to strive for excellence in legal education. The newly elected LSU executives are now led by Spencer Addo and Maame Yaa Tamakloe.
The 49th Law Week of the University of Ghana Law Students’ Union was a resounding success, blending academic rigor, community service, and social activities. The diverse range of events ensured that there was something for everyone, reinforcing the sense of community among the law students. As the celebrations came to a close, participants looked forward to building on the week’s experiences to further their legal careers and contribute positively to society.
