The University of Ghana held the maiden edition of its Open Day at the University’s sports complex to welcome and educate prospective students and parents on the school’s
The event themed ‘Think premier, Think UG’ was saw a congregation of the prospective students, parents, guardians and the general public on the University’s Campus.
In line with the University’s vision, the general public was offered the opportunity to engage with faculty members and UG students, to gain first-hand insight into the university’s programs, Courses available, admissions requirements, processes, and an exclusive tour of academic facilities, among other relevant issues.
In an interview with Univers News, some prospective students from various Senior High Schools shared their expectations regarding the opportunities UG Open Day presents for their Tertiary education.
“I was hoping to get more information about the University and to get a feel of what campus life will be like, as well as meet some students to socialize with.”
“I came here to get information about what admissions requirement entails, available courses, and basically how Uni life works, so far I have visited the humanities desk and I have an idea about the programs available.”
In an engagement with Univers News, Student counselor for West African Senior High School, who is also an alumni of the University, Josephine Kumesi expressed her concerns about the organizational turnout of the first-day event.
“As for West African Senior High School, this is not new to us, so I can challenge that they didn’t organize it well enough. GES has been organizing a similar event for us at Accra Academy. When you go, you sit and the head of the department comes to talk to the students, but with this, we are standing and some of the students have not eaten yet. Some private universities even come for the students from the school, but currently my students are scattered and we can’t leave without a single one,” she voiced.
She further commended the University for its initiative to organize the open day event which presented Students with the opportunity to make suitable life choices for their future.
“We know it benefits the [students] a lot, it helps them, motivates them especially when they know the cut-off points and what they want to read before coming into the University and it encourages them to learn.”
