Record title holders of the South African premier soccer league (PSL), Mamelodi Sundowns have been paired against Egypt’s Al Ahly in the first ever semi-final clash of the African Football League (AFL).
Masandawana made their way through to the semi final after seeing off Angola’s Petro de Luanda yesterday at the Loftus Versfeld by an aggregate scoreline of 2-0 despite, the stalemate in the tie from the match day.
The said game saw the ‘Brazilians’ reduced to 10 men as early as the 2nd minute when Mothobi Mvala was sent for an early shower after hurling down Petro de Luanda’s attacker. But Sundown’s resolute defending on the night saw them sail through leading to Masandawana facing Ahly, who progressed to the semi final with an aggregate scoreline of 3-3 against Simba SC.
Sundowns and Al Ahly are set to face off for the first time since March 2023, with Masandawana having the edge over the Red Devils as they remain unbeaten in the last 5 encounters between the sides; they recorded 3 victories and scoring 10 goals in the last 5 matches involving both sides.
Sundowns will be hoping their terrific recent run of form against Al Ahly will come to the fore on October 29 when both teams take to the field in the AFL semi final 1st leg tie.
