Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff have made history in the tennis world after coming out victorious in the men’s singles and women’s singles respectively at the US Open 23 in New York.
Novak Djokovic edged world number (3), Danil Medvedev 6-3,6-3,7-6 to claim his record breaking 24th career Grandslam title and a 4th US open title on the night of September 10, adding to previous victories in 2011, 2015 and 2018.
An upset was far from happening as Djokovic came out on top of the repeat of the 2021 US open final by taking all 3 sets from Medvedev, despite having the edge over Djokovic when the pair met on hardcourt in Dubai earlier this year.
It did not look good for Medvedev this time around as Djokovic cruised past him and claimed a 24th career grandslam title that puts the Serbian further ahead of Spanish greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic’s latest Grandslam adds up to his trophy laden cabinet as the US open becomes his 96th Career title, placing him behind all time greats, Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109).
Novak Djokovic’s victory over Medvedev saw the Serbian compete in 4 grandslam finals in 2023, with victories in 3 of them.
The victory sees Novak Djokovic usurp Carloz Alcarez as number one in the latest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world ranking.
Meanwhile in the Women’s singles, 19-year old USA sensation, Coco Gauff squared off against Belarusian, Aryna Sarbalenka in the final of the Women’s singles on Saturday night, September 9th.
The pair were making their bow on the grand occasion of the US open final, where both Coco Gauff and the Impending ATP world nnumberone Aryna Sarbalenka were up for the occasion as the final lived up to the billing.
It was Coco who would prevail in the encounter as she won her 2 sets by 6-2, 6, 3 to curtail Aryna Sarbalenka’s 6-2 and claim the sets by 2-1.
Coco Gauff’s victory saw her clinch her first ever Grandslam trophy and her first US open title as well. Her US open victory trophy will be added to her Cincinnati masters trophy won earlier this year.
Tennis legend, Roger Federer took to his social media on X to congratulate Coco Gauff.
“Inspirational win @Coco Gauff, been watching your tennis and following you for years. It’s great to see so much hard work and passion being rewarded.You shine brighter than ever,” he wrote.
With this victory, Coco Gauff also became the youngest USA woman since the great Serena Williams to win a US open title (19 years).
