15 times and five times Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League champions, Real Madrid and Football Club Barcelona could be kicked out of the 2023/24 Champions League season due to the latest development on Luis Rubiales’ kissing scandal.

Reports in the media on Monday suggest Spanish Football Association, in defence of the Football Association (FA) president, have asked the European football governing body, UEFA to expel the association from the union. The request comes after the Spanish government ordered the Spanish Sports Tribunal to suspend Rubiales after he announced that he will not resign from his position despite his suspension from football by the Fédération Internationale de football association (FIFA)

Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, Yolanda Diaz says that the government is doing everything to suspend Rubiales.

“We (the government) are directly applying article 62, sub-section C, which aims at completely suspending Rubiales.”

Should the request of the FA be fulfilled, no Spanish clubs will be able to play in any European football in the new football season. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Real Sociedad will participate in the Champions League as Villareal and Real Betis are expected to feature in the Europa League while Osasuna plays in the Conference League.
