As part of the University of Ghana’s 75th Anniversary, the University organised a health outreach programme around some selected communities in Accra.
The health outreach programme was held on the 18th of August, 2023 at the Madina Main Market, Madina Zongo Junction (CHPS Compound), and Agbogbloshie.
Speaking to UniversNews during a health outreach program, Director of the University of Ghana Business School Leadership and Organizational Development, Prof. Kwasi Dartey-Baah explained the essence of the programme.
“The essence of the program was to engage certain communities with respect to their health. This enables the University to reach out to individuals in very deprived communities to help them check their health status and receive information on their vitalities.”
Prof. Kwasi also made emphasis on the University’s goal to reach out to the public’s needs in contrast to beliefs depicting the institution as mainly academic in nature.
“A lot of times, people think that the University is likely to be involved in just academic activities, but we also render services in the interest of the public. This event is also an opportunity to make the University’s presence felt in the public domain.”
Meanwhile, Public Health Nutrition Specialist and Head of the Population, Family, and Reproductive Health Department Prof. Richmond Aryeteey stated reiterated the University’s goal to provide service to the community.
He revealed that more services will be provided for the selected community members following the results from their screening.
“Our goal is to provide service to the community. We are also going to provide services based on the results we obtain from the screenings. That is what we are going to achieve.”
The Outreach Programme included a health screening which involved eye screenings, blood sugar level tests, blood pressure tests as well dental screenings.
The programme was a unique opportunity for the University to give back to the community that has been an integral part of the University’s journey over the past 75 years.
The UG@75 Health Outreach was in partnership with the LA Nkwantanang Municipal Health Directorate, with support from the University’s Health Services, Medical School, Dental School, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Department of Psychology, Department of Social Work, Careers and Counselling Centre and the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
