A month-long ban on drumming and noise in Ga States has been officially lifted.
This happened on Thursday 15 June 2023, after Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II beat the Odadao twin drums at the Gbese Palace amid cheers and musket fire, signaling the lifting of the ban.
This year’s drumming and noise ban began on May 15 as part of preparations for the Homowo festival by the Ga people.
The ban covered all forms of noise, including the use of loudspeakers, drums, tambourines, and roadside evangelism. With the ban lifted, the communications director of the Gbese Mantse office, Theophilus Wilson Azy, told Citi News in an interview that everything was ready to celebrate the Homowo festival.
According to him, the festival is set to begin from the 19th August.
He further highlighted the importance of the festival’s celebrations.
“The Odadao signifies the beginning of the Homowo. In a few weeks from now, that will be on the 19th August, the principal jurisdiction of this land will celebrate the Homowo festival. The Homowo festival is an activity to hoot at hunger. The Gas have passed through war, have passed through certain journeys, and they did these activities to remember their forefathers and ancestors and ask blessings from the Almighty God,” he said.
