Director of Sports at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, has expressed strong optimism about his team’s preparations ahead of the 2025 FISU University World Cup Football tournament in Dalian, China.

For the first time in the university’s history, UDS will represent the entire African continent at the prestigious tournament, a remarkable feat that highlights their growing reputation in university football.

Set to take place from September 17 to 28, the global competition will gather student-athletes from 17 countries, celebrating over a week of high-level football, commitment, and cross-cultural engagement.

Speaking on Sports Express on Radio Univers, Ibrahim Tanko described the team’s journey as inspiring and hinted that the ultimate prize is well within their sights.

“As a university and as a directorate, we always plan ahead of time. And for that matter, we have set up ourselves and we are on course. Every club or team, or whatever, always has a mission to accomplish. So the ultimate could be something that anybody at all would be looking at,” he said.

Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko also shared insights into the team’s journey toward earning the honour of representing the entire African continent at the upcoming 2025 FISU University World Cup Football tournament.

“It was a tournament that FASU has been organising, and the winner always qualifies for the stage we are about to embark on. So in Ghana, Legon and UDS were the two teams that were in the competition. We were in different groups.

“We were in Group A, and Legon were in Group B. So we managed to win all our matches except one. We lost one match to a team from Guinea, but they couldn’t even qualify for the semi-finals. So we qualified for the finals and then eventually we won the trophy,” he concluded.
