2024 GUSA Cross Country: UG defends crown in Kumasi

The University of Ghana successfully defended its title in the Men’s category at the 27th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) cross country race in Kumasi.

The competition took place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from July 4th to 7th 2024, under the distinguished patronage of Professor Rita Akosua Dickson (Vice Chancellor -KNUST).

The theme for the 2024 event:” KNUST Nyansa Mmrika” – was aimed at extending the frontiers of endurance, with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology hosting 14th other tertiary institutions in the country – including the University of Ghana (UG), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University of Education Winneba (UEW), the University of Development Studies (UDS), and a host of tertiary institutions across the country.

The University of Ghana presented 8 athletes in the men’s category at this year’s cross country meet. Nakousi David won a gold medal as he successfully defended the title for the University of Ghana.

Salifu Seidu followed suit by winning a silver medal, with Basit Afful (5th), Bazaar Morris (12th), Issac Mensah (14th), Abanga Inusah (17th), Tony Asigbe (22nd), Issah Saleem (28th), finishing outside the podium spots.

According to the competition rules, the top five athletes from each team are used to score the event, making the University of Ghana the overall champions in the men’s category with 34 points.

The University of Cape Coast came second with 56 points, followed by the Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) in third position with 80 points.

In the women’s category, Naomi Addo, Elizabeth Agyei, Agnes Agyei, Sarah Duah, Stella Agbokpah, Rajvir Rai, Gloria Mbey finish, and Gloria Yartey were the contingents for the University of Ghana.

The team achieved a remarkable feat by finishing second in this year’s edition, marking a significant improvement from their fourth-placed finish in the previous year’s competition.

The women’s category was keenly contested between the University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana. However, the University of Cape Coast emerged victorious over the University of Ghana, with overall points of 42 and 53 respectively.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources won the bronze medal after accumulating 55 points.

The University of Ghana men’s cross country team have now won the competition for the third time in a row after winning it in 2022, 2023 and 2024 editions.
