The Vice Chairperson of the University of Ghana Health Service Welfare Association, Miss Eva Johnson, has disclosed that Legon Hospital records an average of 5 to 10 abortion cases monthly, involving students from the University of Ghana.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive as part of activities marking World Health Day, Miss Johnson noted that while abortion-related cases are frequent, the situation is under control due to adherence to proper medical procedures and increased awareness about reproductive health.
“Every month, we record between 5 to 10 cases of abortion at Legon Hospital involving students from the University of Ghana. Unsafe abortions are the real threat to life, but fortunately, many young people are now informed,” she said.
She emphasized that students are increasingly aware of available services for comprehensive abortion care and post-abortion support, which has significantly reduced the incidence of unsafe procedures.
“With experience, I can confidently say we rarely record deaths related to unsafe abortions,” Miss Johnson added, crediting improved health education and access to professional care for the decline in severe complications.
