Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has reiterated that the authority to elect Ghana’s next president rests solely with the citizens, not the EC.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra on Friday, Jean Mensa emphasized that the EC does not determine the outcome of elections.

She underscored that the power to choose the president lies exclusively in the hands of Ghanaians.

“…We as a commission do not have the power to determine who wins elections. It is not in our control to determine the outcome of the election. The power indeed lies with the good people of our dear country.

“It is only the citizens and the citizens alone who can determine who should lead them, not the EC. It is the candidate who is given the power to lead them by the citizens who will be declared president of the Republic of Ghana by the EC come the 7th of December 2024,” she stated.

She extended her best wishes to all qualified candidates and encouraged them to focus their campaigns on policies and programmes that will benefit society.

The EC further called for a respectful, issue-based campaign atmosphere.
