The wait is finally over as the draw for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been completed, and the groups are now set for the tournament in Morocco.
The draw ceremony which took place on Friday, November 22,2024 at the Mohammed VI Sport Center in Salé, Rabat , Morocco saw 12 teams divided into three groups of four teams each. The teams were seeded into four levels based on their FIFA rankings from August 2024.
Host nation Morocco was automatically assigned position A1 and will lead Group A, which also features Zambia, Senegal, and Dr.Congo.
Defending champions South Africa took position C1 and will headline Group C, which also includes three-time finalists Ghana, Mali, Tanzania
Meanwhile ,nine time champions, Nigeria, the third team in Level 1, occupied position B1 and will top Group B, which also features Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana
Here are the groups and teams:
Group A :Morocco, Zambia, Senegal ,Dr.Congo
Group B:Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria,Botswana
Group C: South Africa, Ghana,Mali and Tanzania
Countries making a return:
The 2024 WAFCON tournament will also see the return of several countries after a long absence.
These countries include:
Ghana
Tanzania
Mali
Dr.Congo
Botswana will also participate in a row for the second time in the WAFCON finals
Knockout stage:
The top two teams from each group, plus two best third-placed teams, advance to the quarter-finals. Quarter-final winners progress to the semi-finals and secure FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification. Losers will compete in the repechage stage for the remaining World Cup spots.
The13th edition which is also the 2024 WAFCON tournament is set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2025.
The 2024 WAFCON tournament represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of African women’s football, offering a platform for the continent’s brightest stars to shine, inspire, and leave a lasting legacy.
