VC honors retiring UG staff, celebrates legacy of service

The University of Ghana has recognized 131 retiring staff members for their decades of dedicated service, with Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo commending their impact as “foundational” to the university’s success.

‎At a send-off ceremony held at the Great Hall, Prof. Amfo , paid tribute to the lasting impact of the retirees, describing their contributions as foundational to the University’s growth and continued excellence.

‎“Your contributions have been instrumental in advancing our mission of teaching, research, and service to society,” she said, commending their commitment, loyalty, and influence on generations of students and colleagues.

‎The ceremony, themed “Dedication and Service: Appreciating Legacies that Last,” featured tributes from university leadership including Registrar Emelia Agyei-Mensah.

‎The total number of retiring staff include 24 senior academic members, 9 senior administrative or professional members, 27 senior technical staff, 18 senior non-technical staff, 17 junior technical staff, 35 junior non-technical staff, and 1 teaching assistant.

‎Addressing academic staff in particular, Prof. Amfo noted their role in positioning the university as a regional leader in higher education. She cited the University of Ghana’s continued standing as the best university in Ghana and the West African sub-region, according to the QS World University Rankings.

‎“According to the latest QS World University Rankings, the University of Ghana has maintained its enviable position as the best university in Ghana and the West African sub-region. That is a feat you should all be proud to have contributed toward,” she said.

‎Prof. Amfo also reflected on strategic developments shaping the university’s future, including the 2024–2029 strategic plan focused on student experience, research impact, faculty and staff support, partnerships, and sustainable resource management.

‎“These frameworks are designed to modernize our operations and position the University as a leader in innovation, inclusion, and academic excellence,” she noted.

‎“We have deepened our commitment to digital transformation and global collaboration, ensuring our staff and students are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.”

‎In closing, Prof. Amfo assured retirees that the university would remain their home, and pledged a renewed focus on engaging and supporting the retiree network.
