UG: VC allocates land for construction of the Digital Youth Village

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has announced that the university has allocated land for the construction of the Digital Youth Village.

The Digital Youth Village is an advanced ICT facility as part of the university’s aim at unlocking the IT capabilities of youth.

She was speaking at the University of Ghana’s 75th Annual New Year School and Conference, which was a 3-day conference being held at the university from 9th to 11th January, 2024 under the theme ‘Nurturing Resilience: Adopting Technology and Embracing Humanism for Sustainable Development.’

In her opening remarks, Prof. Appiah Amfo stated that the project is in line with the university’s digitalization agenda, which is also aimed at improving the IT skills of students in the country.

“In line with our digitalization aspiration, my administration has approved land for the construction of the Digital Youth Village, which is indeed a huge breakthrough in the history of the New Year School and Conference. This project is intended to deliver a first-class ICT facility to unleash the IT potential of youth from all over the country.”

She also expressed her gratitude to the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo for including the Digital Youth Village in the 2024 national budget as was remarked by the vice president, Dr. Bawumia at the conference.

“I also take this opportunity to thank His Excellency, the President of the Republic, for making provision in the 2024 annual budget for the construction of the project.”

Prof. Appiah Amfo further revealed that 475 laptops have been received by the university to support the digitalization initiatives, with 309 laptops distributed to economically challenged students under the one student, one laptop initiative, and the remaining 166 laptops yet to be distributed.

“I am happy to report that through the commitment of management and students of the university, as well as the benevolence of well-meaning individuals and institutions, we have received 475 laptops meant for economically challenged students, out of which 309 have been distributed, with 166 for further distribution.”

“As we start a new session, we have also made sufficient plans to provide laptops on high pitches, plans for our students, and further plans to assemble laptops on our campus.”

On the construction of two hotspot comfort zones for students at the university, the Vice-Chancellor gave her assurance by stating that the project is underway to help students find leisure at the facility in between their lecture hours.

“The construction of two hotspot comfort zones on the Legon campus has begun with resources being mobilized for the construction of a few more of these zones on campus.”
