The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Ghana branch (UTAG-UG), has intensified its call for the immediate resignation of the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor, and his Deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.

Speaking on the Campus Exclusive show on January 20, 2026, the UTAG-UG Secretary, Dr. Godfred Hagan, said the demand was not a sudden decision.

Dr. Hagan explained that while the association had been engaged in what he described as “behind-the-scenes diplomatic engagement, resolving one issue after the other,” the recent directive on post-retirement contracts became the final trigger.

“For us, that is what broke the camel’s back,” he stated.

He further noted that the association has lost confidence in the leadership’s ability to take advice, even within GTEC itself.

“We have our doubts as to whether he is even heeding sound counsel at the Commission,” Dr. Hagan remarked, adding that since the Deputy Director-General is also part of the decision-making process, the call for resignation must “rope in the Deputy as well.”

While acknowledging that Prof. Jinapor has “made his mark and done well” in some respects, Dr. Hagan maintained that he must nonetheless vacate the position.

“We believe that the real problem is the Director-General, Professor Jinapor, and he has to leave the scene.”

Dr. Hagan also disclosed that officials of the University of Ghana met with GTEC on January 8, 2026, to transparently explain the recent academic fee increases, which he said were co-signed by student leadership to address deteriorating lecture halls. Despite this engagement, GTEC later issued a public directive that contradicted the agreement.

“And then, before you know it, you issue a statement out there — ‘withdraw this.’ What kind of embarrassment is that?” he asked.

He described the directive as a betrayal of trust and a dismissal of the SRC’s efforts to improve campus facilities, declaring:

“We’ve had enough.”
