The Union Ghana clinched the championship title at the University of Ghana Community games, defeating the Alumni Association in a thrilling final on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The event, an initiative of the University of Ghana Sports & Wellness Directorate and produced by RITE Sports, was supported by GT Bank and Warrior King Watches
It attracted a lively and supportive crowd, which included distinguished guests from the university’s senior leadership, such as Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Registrar Mrs. Emelia
Agyei-Mensah, and other notable officials, who added to the excitement and prestige of the occasion.
The tournament featured a thrilling competition among eight teams, including the College of Humanities, College of Health Sciences, College of Education, College of Basic & Applied Sciences, UG Central Administration, UG Alumni Association, the Union Ghana, and the University of Ghana Enterprises Ltd, as they face off against each other in a battle for supremacy.
After a series of intense matches, The Union and the Alumni Association faced off in the final, which ended 1-1 after full-time. The Union ultimately emerged victorious in the penalty shootout with a 4-3 win.
The event showcased exceptional sportsmanship and unity, generating excitement for the upcoming championship in February
2025.
“The league is going to start on the 1st of February 2025 and it is going to be 28 days weeks. So, 14 weeks from the first session, and we take a break for the second round. We will play the games every Saturday evening at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium,” Director of Sports and Wellness, Dr Austin Luguterah said.
