Dean of the Institute of Journalism (IJ) at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Professor Godwin Etse Sikanku, has welcomed the appointment of Chief Executive Officer of Special Group of Companies, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, as the university’s first Chancellor.
The appointment, approved by the UniMAC Governing Council on May 26, 2026, takes effect on Saturday, August 1, making Dr. Ofori Sarpong the first person to serve as Chancellor of the university.
In an interview with Univers News, Professor Sikanku described the appointment as a significant milestone in UniMAC’s history and expressed confidence that Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s leadership, experience and network would contribute to the university’s growth and development.
“I think it’s a step in the right direction. Odadeɛ Ernest Ofori Sarpong will bring to the table a wide variety of skills, entrepreneurial ability, his networking and his stature, which he’ll use to help the university achieve its vision. So I commend the university management and council for this decision,” he said.
Professor Sikanku further noted that the appointment presents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, creating more opportunities for students and the institution.
Some UniMAC students also welcomed the appointment, expressing hope that Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s leadership would expand internship opportunities, strengthen industry partnerships and improve career prospects for graduates.
“I was happy to hear about Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong’s appointment as UniMAC’s first Chancellor because it’s a big milestone for the university. I believe his experience will bring positive change and create more opportunities for students through internships and partnerships,” one student said.
Another student said she hopes the incoming Chancellor will support practical learning and improve facilities, particularly for students in the Film Department.
“I think Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong’s appointment is a good move for UniMAC, considering that he’s one of the prolific businessmen in the country. I’m hoping he’d introduce new ideas that will help students, improve the university and provide more support for practical learning and better facilities.”
A third student also expressed confidence that Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s leadership would have a positive impact on both students and the university.
“As a student of University of Media Arts and Communication Studies, I’m very happy we have Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong as our chancellor. As a great man he is, I’m expecting nothing but then a great impact on the students and the school as well” the student added.
The students also expressed hope that his tenure would promote innovation and contribute to the continued growth of UniMAC.
