The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has hosted a consultation meeting on Ghana’s proposed Broadcasting Bill, with special focus on provisions related to community broadcasting.

The dialogue brought together leading voices from Ghana’s media sector to discuss the bill and its potential impact on the country’s media landscape. The event took place on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in North Ridge, Accra.

Chairperson of the meeting, Professor Kwame Karikari, spoke about the crucial role community media plays in Ghana’s democracy and development. He emphasized that for such media to thrive, the legal framework must be clear, fair, and supportive especially for people in rural and underserved areas.

Head of the UNESCO Office in Accra, Edmond Moukala, also stressed the importance of inclusive policymaking. He stated that media laws should be shaped with input from all stakeholders, not just a select few. He reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to supporting media systems that promote free expression and ensure that every community, including those often left out, can be heard.

In a presentation during the meeting, legal analyst and media practitioner Samson Lardy Anyenini, Esq., outlined the differences between the current Broadcasting Bill and the revised version. He explained the key legal changes and what they could mean for the media sector. His presentation sparked an active discussion, with participants raising practical questions about licensing, funding, and the operational independence of community media outlets.

The meeting concluded with calls for continued engagement and collaboration as the bill moves through the legislative process.
