The Vice President of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), Jeffery Adu-Yeboah—popularly known as Jay Lit—has revealed that a shuttle service for off-campus students will soon be rolled out.

In a WhatsApp post on Sunday, July 20, he announced that the shuttle service is expected to begin next week and will transport non-resident students from their various homes and hostels to their lecture halls.

A similar initiative was previously proposed by immediate past SRC President, Frank Tsikata, to facilitate transportation for non-resident students. However, following the announcement, the plan did not materialise. Addressing this during an interview on Radio Univers’ major news bulletin, Univers News, on Monday, July 21, the 67th SRC Vice President stated that the two major challenges that typically hinder the implementation of such a project have now been addressed.

“Two main challenges to implementation are usually securing approval and finding a transport service that is both available and willing to comply with the university’s rules and regulations, as well as cooperate with the student body. You may get one but not the other. But by God’s grace, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, through the Dean of Student Affairs, has approved the rollout of this transport service for non-residents effective immediately. We are currently engaging with the Transport Unit to finalise the routes they’ll use. So, any moment from now, the SRC will provide an update on the start date and the pilot routes,” he explained.

Jay Lit further indicated that non-resident students were consulted to determine priority locations, adding that the policy has already been initiated and will soon be implemented.

“The very first time we discussed this, we gathered feedback from students on the routes we should prioritise. So this is not just a promise or something we’re now planning to initiate—we’ve already initiated it, and implementation will begin very soon,” he added.
