The University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (UGSRC), in partnership with the Ghana National Fire Service, organized a fire safety training program for vendors at the night market. The session covered key topics, including fire causes, prevention measures, and practical demonstrations on using fire extinguishers.

UGSRC General Secretary, Lorinda Owie Teyehugmeh, emphasized the significance of the training, especially given the dry season and recent fire outbreaks across markets in Ghana.

She noted that fire incidents could have serious implications for students, making such training beneficial for the entire university community.

“This initiative is not only for market vendors but for everyone on campus. In case of a fire outbreak, students and vendors alike will be better prepared to respond effectively.”

The lead trainer, Mr. Samuel Oteng, Station Officer of the Legon Fire Service, commended the participation and expressed confidence that vendors would apply the knowledge gained.

“The turnout was impressive, and we provided the necessary training and equipment. We hope the vendors will use these skills to manage fire incidents effectively.”

Market vendors also shared their excitement about the training, expressing newfound confidence in handling fire emergencies.

“We learned a lot about fire safety, including different types and causes of fires,” one vendor said.

“I now know that using a wet sack or ordinary water can be effective in putting out certain types of fires.”

The initiative highlights the importance of fire safety awareness and proactive measures in preventing disasters, ensuring a safer environment for both vendors and students on campus.
