The General Assembly of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) has approved the appointment of three new Electoral Commissioners for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic years following a reopened nomination and vetting process.
The newly confirmed commissioners — Nana Mensah Bonsu, Frank Papa Archer and Gertrude Essah-Mensah — were recommended by the UGSRC Electoral Commission’s Vetting Committee and were duly approved by the General Assembly during a sitting on Sunday July 20,2025.
This approval comes after the original nomination and vetting process had been completed and nominees from that initial round had already been approved. However, concerns were reportedly raised by some individuals over the short time frame during which nominations were initially opened, prompting the Council to reopen nominations and conduct a fresh vetting.
The revised process opened on Thursday, July 17, and closed on Friday, July 18, at 4 p.m., with 11 valid applications received. Vetting took place online via Google Meet on Saturday, July 19, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting about two hours.
Though two of the seven committee members were absent at the start of the session, the remaining five voted to proceed in line with Article 33, Clause 2, of the UGSRC Constitution.
“Pursuant to the return from recess, the House convened on Saturday, July 19, 2025, where the vetting of the qualified EC nominees was held in the presence of but without the participation of the General Assembly,” the committee noted.
With the General Assembly’s approval now secured, the new commissioners are set to oversee student electoral activities for the academic year.
