The 2025 University of Ghana SRC elections, held on Monday, August 18, ended inconclusively, with all positions heading for a runoff after no candidate secured the required 50% plus one vote, according to the provisional results.
Article 30(7) of SRC Constitution says “where no candidate scores more than fifty percent of the valid votes cast, there shall be a run-off election between the first two candidates with the highest number of votes within seven (7) days after the declaration of results, which shall be by a simple majority of valid votes cast.”
From the provisional results, in the presidential race, Larbi Ofori Richmond and Gyampo Ayeh Ebenezer Derrick led with 45.7% (11,085 votes). They were followed by Evander Kofi Akrasi and Michael Fareed Yeng Anwar, who polled 37.2% (9,019 votes). The other contenders are now eliminated, leaving the two leading tickets to battle for the presidency.
For treasurer, Gideon Ohene topped with 48.2% (11,703 votes), while Shadrack Acquah and Andoh Emmanuel Yooku collected 24.6% and 23.5% respectively.
In the general secretary contest, Hillary Philipa Nyarko polled 44.5% (10,800 votes), ahead of Augustina Naa Adaku Ashong with 32.8% and Asempapa Setsofe Micheline with 19.6%.
Out of 59,460 registered students, only 24,265 cast their ballots, representing a relatively low voter turnout.
The SRC Electoral Commission is yet to officially declare the certified results and set a date for the runoff.
