Professor of Political Science and acting Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, Seidu Alidu, has been elected as the Parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Tamale Central constituency ahead of the by-election scheduled for September 30.
The election became necessary following the passing of the former MP for the area, Murtala Mohammed.
Professor Alidu beat 11 other contenders to secure the NDC ticket. The primary, held at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, was conducted under heavy security to ensure order. The exercise was largely peaceful.
Out of 1,551 valid votes cast, Professor Alidu secured 840 votes, emerging as the clear winner. His closest contender, Abdul Hannan Gundado, polled 536 votes. The results were as follows:

In a related development, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not contest the upcoming by-election, citing respect for the memory of the late MP, Alhaji Murtala Mohammed.
Professor Seidu Alidu is a Political Science professor at the University of Ghana and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Asian Studies. With over a decade of teaching and research experience in Ghana and abroad, he has published extensively in his field.
