Veteran Musician, Guru, known officially as Maradona Yeboah Adjei has been ruled out from the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) Elections.

This comes after the electoral commission of the UGSRC announced on 16 August, 2024, via a statement, noting that Guru failed to meet the critical residency requirement outlined in Article 30 of the UGSRC Constitution.

The Vetting Committee found out that Guru did not qualify under this criterion, as he is a non-resident of the institution, effectively disqualifying his ticket together with his Vice Presidential candidate Jeffery Adu- Yeboah, popularly known as Jay Lit.

This disqualification decision is anchored in the UGSRC’s strict interpretation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24), which mandates that if one candidate on a ticket fails to meet eligibility requirements, the entire ticket is invalidated.

The Electoral Commission emphasized that this rule is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all candidates are held to the same constitutional standards.

On August 12, 2024, Radio Univers held an online poll for all aspirants, in which Guru was defeated by his main rival, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, popularly known as Manuel Life.

Out of a total of 7,149 votes cast, Guru and his running mate, Jay Lit, garnered 2,489 votes (approximately 34.8%), while Manuel Life and his vice-presidential candidate, Lawrence Edinam Egleh, won decisively with 4,470 votes (approximately 62.5%).
