The University of Ghana’s Electoral Commission has postponed the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections due to an interlocutory injunction placed on the process.
The injunction follows a ruling by the University of Ghana Appeals Board, which reversed the disqualification of presidential candidates Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah and Maradona Adjei Yeboah. Both candidates had been disqualified earlier by the UGSRC Electoral Commission over eligibility concerns. However, the Appeals Board’s decision has reinstated them in the race.
Prior to the ruling, the UGSRC Electoral Commission had disqualified two presidential-vice presidential tickets, citing constitutional violations. These candidates included Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as Guru, and his running mate, Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah (Jay Lit), as well as Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah (Manuel Life) and his running mate, Lawrence Edinam Egleh.
According to an official statement released on 18th September 2024, the injunction follows a lawsuit filed by a student at the Circuit Court in Adenta, Accra, against the University, its Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), the Dean of Student Affairs, and the SRC Electoral Commission. The lawsuit concerns the upcoming 2024 SRC elections.
The Electoral Commission stated that it had been served with a writ of summons, statement of claim, and the application for the injunction on 17th September 2024. As per legal advice, all actions related to the elections have been suspended to avoid prejudicing the ongoing case.
The injunction comes just days after the Commission reinstated two previously disqualified candidates following an appeal, adding further complexity to the election process.
The UGSRC Electoral Commission urged patience as they navigate these legal challenges, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair election process.
