Uganda held by Tanzania in tightly contested Group C clash

Uganda and Tanzania played out a tense 1-1 draw in a dramatic Group C clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as both sides battled fiercely for vital points at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat.

The encounter delivered all the elements of a classic AFCON contest—high intensity, late drama, a decisive penalty, and emotions that lingered until the final whistle.

Both teams began with urgency, fully aware of the importance of the fixture in a tightly contested group. Tanzania, who had endured a 10-match winless run across four AFCON tournaments, stunned the Ugandan faithfuls by taking the lead in the 59th minute through a calmly converted penalty from Simon Msuva.

The spot kick was awarded after Uganda’s Baba Alhassan was penalised for handling the ball inside the 18 yard box.

Msuva, featuring in his third AFCON tournament, showed remarkable composure as he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, silencing the 10,540 fans in attendance.

The goal ignited belief among the Taifa Stars, who looked poised to finally end their long wait for an AFCON victory.

Uganda, however, were forced to regroup quickly as they searched for a way back into the contest.

Their response came ten minutes from time. Substitute Denis Omedi delivered a precise cross into the box, which was expertly met by Uche Ikpeazu, the St Johnstone forward powering home the equaliser to restore parity in the 80th minute.

Uganda’s persistence was nearly rewarded in stoppage time when they were handed a golden opportunity to claim all three points from the penalty spot.

Amid heavy rain and a dramatic thunderclap, Allan Okello stepped up but sent his effort over the crossbar, drawing gasps from the crowd.

The final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils, leaving both Uganda and Tanzania on one point apiece. With qualification now hanging in the balance, both sides will look to the outcome of Nigeria and Tunisia’s result to determine their fate in the competition.

The stalemate showcased the intensity of regional rivalries and the competitiveness of AFCON 2025, proving that no match is ever short of drama.
