The University of Ghana’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, confirmed that programs awaiting accreditation at the university are currently undergoing the accreditation process.

This revelation came during the Public Account Committee sitting organized by the Ministry of Education on July 18 at the Parliament House, to discuss the affairs of Tertiary schools across the country.

Accreditations of programs in the University are review processes meant to ensure that university programs are following the quality standards of education in the country.

Speaking at the meeting chaired by Honorable James Klutse, Prof. Appiah Amfo assured that all yet-to-be accredited programs would receive accreditation before the upcoming student graduation.

“If there is a program that is not fully accredited, we have started the process. If we offered the program, then we will be obliged to examine the student. Given the processes and systems we’ve put in place now, if there is any program like that, by the time student are graduating we would have accreditation.”

Responding to the committee on the number of unaccredited programs being offered by the university, University of Ghana Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Naa Kwantsua Agyei-Mensah disclosed that an estimate of about 20 undergraduate programs out of 80 were yet to be accredited.

“Specifically, about the Diploma programs, majority in the University are no longer on offer. We have phased them out and so we do not offer those programs. We have put in place systems to ensure that all 80 programs are properly accredited, out of the 80, 60 of the undergraduate program is fully accredited and the rest are in the process of being accredited.”

According to the 2021 Auditor-General’s report, it revealed that 374 academic programmes at the University of Ghana were unaccredited. Out of the 374 courses, 14 of them are Diploma programmes, 80 out of the 374 programmes are Undergraduate courses, Post-Graduate unaccredited courses are 213, and 67 PhD courses.
