The University of Ghana chapters of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) and the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) engaged in a heated debate over the 10% tax on bet winnings, expressing conflicting views on its implementation and impact.

UG TESCON President, Prince Appiah Dankwa, argued that the 10% tax on bet winnings is not currently in effect and was never implemented.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive, he aligned with the former Finance Minister’s recent statement, emphasizing that many Ghanaians misunderstand the difference between the lottery tax and the betting tax, which explains the minister’s clarification.

“The 10% tax on betting has not been implemented; it is a tax that does not exist. So you cannot claim to be abolishing a tax that was never in effect, except for the specific taxes the Finance Minister mentioned for removal.”

Meanwhile, UG TEIN member Mudasir Braimah criticized those opposing the budget, calling them “enemies of the state” and asserting that Ghanaians are excited about the financial policies, particularly the adjustments to certain taxes introduced by the NDC.

“People need to appreciate this; you can see the excitement everywhere. Only enemies of the state, like the NPP, would speak against the benefits outlined in the budget. No new taxes were introduced—what the Finance Minister stated was that some existing taxes would be adjusted.”

TESCON and TEIN serve as the student wings of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), respectively, providing a platform for political engagement and activism in tertiary institutions.
