The University of Ghana community is abuzz following the announcement of a new Student Representative Council (SRC) aspirant who is adopting the tactics of the New Force Movement.

This revelation comes shortly after Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, declared his intention to contest for the high office of SRC president.

The mystery deepened when a flyer began circulating online on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, revealing an undisclosed person wearing a mask. The flyer features the hashtag “The New Force,” reminiscent of Nana Kwame Bediako’s entry into the political scene.

This new development has sparked diverse reactions from the student community. Univers News captured a range of opinions, and here is what they had to say.

Some students observed that national political trends are increasingly influencing university politics.

See how the [national] politics is shaping students politics at Legon. You could see the TEIN, you could see the TESCON, you could see how they’re competing against each other and you could see the New Force, the ‘Legon Cheddar’, so you could see how the mainstream politics is shaping students politics at Legon.”

Others however pointed out that the New Force’s late entry into the campaign could jeopardize the aspirant’s chances of winning.

“Whoever advised this New force guy is an enemy to him. In my point of view, I’d say he’s pushing him to be disgraced. Listen, let’s break it down; We’re in the second semester and this is a semester where elections take place and you’re now releasing a flyer saying, with the New force, you’ve covered your face and all those things like seriously?”

“Some people started since Level 100 and right now you’ve released a flyer that you’re the New Force and the next one would be like ‘I’m the face behind the mask’ or something like that. If he has gotten money, he should use it to sponsor people. It is better than using it to do a campaign that will yield no results. The guy isn’t even needed!  I don’t know the underground work he has been doing but he brings that ‘New force’ strategy to it but do not think it will come out well for him.”

Regardless, not everyone is taking the whole situation serious, as they see the whole situation a trivial gig.

“The first time I saw it that I didn’t take it seriously. Seriously I thought maybe it was a joke, a prank or something. I didn’t take it seriously until Someone told me it was real and the person would unveil himself later and I was like shocked. Which brain will be behind this? I didn’t get it. I wonder the number of students who would have the same thought as mine because I didn’t take it seriously.”

Despite, the mixed reactions from students at the University of Ghana, there is a sense of anticipation; a new trend that will give the aspirant enough time to gain traction among students.

“The man in the mask is tapping into a trend, I hold nothing against him. Some months ago the political space saw the emergence of a movement by the name of the New Force. I believe the suspense will afford the aspirant the needed mileage and popularity with in the student community. So for now, fingers crossed as we wait to see who is the face behind the mask”

As the quest to become the 67th UGSRC president continues, the pressing question remains; who wins the seat when it’s all said and done ??
